An older guy I work with was changing the suspension on his Z3 coupe when his heart gave out. I never did talk to him about cars, but I gave him a thumbs up in the parking lot once and he grinned a mile wide. He was a damn decent dude the way people today just aren't, and he was one of us. I'm tearing up. Dammit.

... I'm afraid to ask, but is he still around?

It's a shame. Seems like a great guy with a great taste in cars.

He was put in an induced coma but didn't wake up after they stopped the drugs. Don't know the results of the brain scan. Still kind of in shock and not sure how to process it, really. I just wish I'd known him better - he's one of those renaissance man types, really brainy, but a DIY tinkerer/mechanic too. I mean, he volunteered to build shelters for the homeless in his spare time, and he literally used to be a rocket scientist.

And he drove a Z3 coupe.

Is it too early to ask if they'll be selling off his car?

As an over 50 dude, you'll find that this type of event happens more frequently as you experience more life. I'm reminded of my grandfather's in law quote after he turned 90 (he lived to 103): "Why don't my friends come over anymore." It's because they were all dead.

All we can do, from my perspective, is to accept (however that has to happen) the changes in our lives that happen. Because they are legion, aren't going away and are unstoppable.

As an appreciator of cars/car tech, I can definitely appreciate a fellow enthusiast as you've described this man. My suggestion? Send him a blessing...put him in your mind, envision him as strongly as possible, and then give him what you have to offer.. bless him, if he commanded that kind of loyalty. And do it every time the thought comes up inside you. That's worked for me for many people I've seen pass or been in dire straights over the years.

Even my 78 year old grandfather can count his living friends on one hand. Such is life I guess.

Heh, probably. As much as I'd like to maintain or restore the car to honor his memory, bringing that kind of stuff up now would probably lead to tears and my teeth getting kicked in.

Yeah ... I'll try to remember that. They're pulling the plug later today. It's been surreal.

Ah. Well, blessings to you too, then.
